Volleyball Lets Early Opportunities Slip Against No. 17 Nelson

Golden Eagles lead 20-15 and 21-18 before Lions close both opening sets with late surges

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- John Brown University carried late leads in each of the opening two sets Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17), but No. 17 Nelson (Texas) answered both times before completing a straight-set decision (23-25, 22-25, 20-25) inside Bill George Arena.

John Brown (14-10, 10-6 Sooner Athletic) led by five late in the opener and held a three-point advantage deep into the second, but Nelson (19-4, 15-0 SAC) remained unbeaten in conference play by producing its best stretches when each set tightened. The visitors ultimately separated themselves offensively, hitting .238 (46-16-126) compared with JBU's .118 (34-20-119).

Outside the attack, however, the statistical margins were slim or favored the Golden Eagles. John Brown finished with a 6-5 edge in service aces and a 5-4 advantage in total blocks while committing only two service errors to Nelson's eight. The visitors held just a 52-50 edge in digs.

Freshman Chelsea Day led all players with 13 kills, hitting .259 (13-6-27) and adding three block assists. Sophomore Olivia Tucker turned in JBU's most efficient attacking performance, putting away eight kills without an error on 21 swings for a .381 clip.

Sophomore Paige Addington paced the floor with a match-high 16 digs while adding two service aces, and junior Tessa Medina finished with 17 assists, six digs and an ace. Freshman Emily Whitten contributed six digs and two aces, while sophomore Reese Montgomery recorded three total blocks, including JBU's lone solo rejection.

"Today was a competitive match against the No. 17-ranked team in the country, and once again, our team came out focused and ready to play," head coach Ken Carver said. "We had opportunities in each of the first two sets and built leads that we carried late into both. I would've loved to see us finish one or both of those sets and find out how that might have changed the complexion of the match. To Nelson's credit, they showed a lot of poise, never got rattled when they fell behind and raised their level of execution when they needed it most."

Nelson spread its offense across four players with nine kills apiece. Camdyn Owen was particularly efficient, terminating all nine without an error on 14 attacks for a .643 percentage, while Addison Standley, Mackenzie Smith and Caroline Boone each added nine kills. Cassidy Hargesheimer directed the visitors with 22 assists and nine digs, while libero Chloe Munoz collected 13 digs.

Set 1: The opener swung repeatedly through the early stages, with nine ties and six lead changes before John Brown finally created meaningful separation late. After Nelson went ahead 13-12, a service error pulled JBU even and consecutive kills from senior Akayla Kador and Day pushed the Golden Eagles in front 15-13.

Nelson tied the set at 15 before John Brown ripped off five consecutive points. Kador sided out, and three straight Nelson attacking errors followed before sophomore Taylor Kosmicki landed an ace for a 20-15 advantage.

The visitors immediately began working back into the frame, scoring three straight before Day stopped the run with a kill for a 21-18 lead. Sophomore Clara Hyke later put JBU ahead 22-19, but Nelson answered with four consecutive points to take its first lead since 13-12.

A Nelson service error gave the Golden Eagles one last tie at 23-23. Smith then sided out for set point before Taylor Felux delivered an ace to finish the 25-23 comeback. Nelson scored six of the final seven points after JBU's 22-19 advantage.

Despite hitting .000 in the opening frame, John Brown remained in control for much of the set by producing three blocks and two aces while Nelson committed eight attacking errors. The visitors finished at .136 (14-8-44).

Set 2: John Brown again established the early momentum, turning a 2-2 tie into an 8-2 advantage behind a pair of Day kills, two Addington aces and several Nelson miscues.

The visitors gradually cut into the margin, but JBU continued finding answers. Back-to-back Carlson kills pushed the Golden Eagles in front 16-11, and after Nelson closed within one, Tucker, Day and Hyke helped John Brown rebuild the cushion to 21-18.

Nelson again responded when the set reached its closing stages. The visitors scored six consecutive points from there, using three kills and three JBU miscues to turn the 21-18 deficit into set point at 24-21. Hyke fought off the first opportunity with a kill, but Owen answered on the next rally to close a 25-22 decision as the visitors claimed seven of the final eight points in the frame.

The offensive difference became more pronounced in the second. Nelson hit .263 (16-6-38), while John Brown improved to .125 (11-6-40).

Set 3: Nelson avoided another early deficit in the third, scoring the first three points and never surrendering the lead. John Brown twice pulled within one during the opening stretch, but the visitors steadily created separation and carried a 15-8 advantage into the middle of the frame.

The Golden Eagles continued battling after Nelson stretched the margin to 23-16. Tucker sided out, Whitten followed with an ace and Montgomery supplied a kill to cut the deficit to 23-19, prompting a Nelson timeout. Smith stopped the three-point push, and after Tucker erased the first match point, Savannah Bergman finished the 25-20 clincher.

JBU produced its strongest offensive set in the third, hitting .209 (14-5-43), but Nelson elevated its attack again and finished at .318 (16-2-44).

The visitors improved their hitting percentage in each successive frame.

"I thought we competed evenly with Nelson in a lot of areas, but offensively we weren't consistent enough, and ultimately that was where they separated themselves and earned the victory," Carver added. "Despite the loss, I was very proud of our effort and the way we competed against the top-ranked team in our conference."

John Brown returns to the road Friday evening (Oct. 23), facing Oklahoma Panhandle State at 6 p.m. inside Anchor D Arena in Goodwell, Okla. The Sooner Athletic matchup will be carried live on the Urban Edge Network and SAC Sports Network.
