SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. -- Sophomore Kate Carlson put away a match-high 12 kills, and the John Brown University volleyball team worked through stretches of offensive inconsistency to sweep Langston (Okla.) in straight sets (25-16, 25-19, 25-19) to open Homecoming 2026 weekend Thursday evening (Oct. 1) inside Bill George Arena.
John Brown (11-7, 7-3 Sooner Athletic) extended its winning streak to five matches by controlling most phases, finishing with advantages in kills (47-25), assists (42-22) and digs (67-49) while outhitting the Lions .231 (47-19-121) to .068 (25-17-118). Langston countered with an 8-5 edge in blocks, while JBU landed five aces and surrendered three.
Carlson paced the Golden Eagle attack at .281 (12-3-32), but the production behind her came from several directions. Junior Federica Ferrari provided an immediate spark off the bench, terminating seven of 12 swings with one error for a .500 attacking percentage while adding two block assists.
JBU was especially efficient through the middle as senior Akayla Kador, sophomore Reese Montgomery and freshman Whitley Underdown combined for 14 kills with only two errors on 27 attempts, attacking at a .444 clip as a group. Montgomery led the trio with eight kills on .500 hitting, Kador finished at .429 (3-0-7) and Underdown converted at .333 (3-1-6).
The Golden Eagles again spread the setting responsibilities across three players, with junior Tessa Medina handing out 16 assists, sophomore Taylor Kosmicki adding 14 and freshman Chloe Hooper contributing nine. That distribution helped the hosts maintain several attacking options even when the offense became uneven for stretches.
Defensively, sophomore Paige Addington and junior Mallory Jury combined for more than half of JBU's 67 digs. Addington finished with a match-high 18 scoops, while Jury collected 17 as the back row adjusted to a Langston attack that mixed conventional swings with a variety of off-speed opportunities.
"Another important conference win tonight to keep our momentum going as we prepare to turn the page into the second half of conference play," head coach Ken Carver said. "Langston settled in after the first set and played some really scrappy volleyball, and there were stretches where we made things more difficult on ourselves offensively by trying to force shots or being overly aggressive.
"I was pleased with the way our players recognized those mistakes, made the necessary adjustments and executed our game plan better as the sets progressed."
Langston (2-10, 1-9 SAC) was led by Ayanna Moore, who finished with seven kills, nine digs and five total blocks. Libero Leah McCall paced the visitors with 13 digs while landing two service aces, and Meagan Anderson handed out 14 assists.
Set 1: John Brown never trailed in the opener after Carlson supplied the first point and the Lions briefly pulled even at 1-1. Day sided out on the next rally, beginning a four-point JBU run that quickly pushed the hosts in front 5-1 and forced an early Langston timeout.
The Golden Eagles continued creating separation and stretched the margin to 12-5 behind an Emily Whitten ace before Langston answered with three straight points. JBU prevented that response from developing into a larger run, maintaining control through the middle of the frame before Carlson helped ignite a five-point surge that moved the advantage from 19-15 to 24-15.
Montgomery contributed two terminations during the closing push, Carlson supplied another and the Blue and Gold benefited from a Langston attacking error before Carlson eventually finished the 25-16 victory.
John Brown hit a match-best .267 (17-5-45) in the opener while holding the Lions to .103.
Set 2: The second developed into the most back-and-forth frame of the evening, producing seven ties and two lead changes as Langston's improved first contact helped the visitors stay in system more consistently. The Lions twice built three-point advantages, first at 11-8 and later at 15-12, before John Brown began taking greater control of the closing rallies.
A Langston service error started a three-point JBU response that tied the set at 15-15, and after the visitors briefly moved back ahead, Day sided out before Carlson's termination gave the Golden Eagles a 17-16 advantage. An ensuing Lion attack error pushed the margin to two, and JBU would not trail again.
With John Brown ahead 20-18, another Langston service error opened the door for four consecutive Golden Eagle points. Montgomery supplied a solo rejection and later a kill during the stretch, helping JBU move to set point at 24-18 before sophomore Olivia Tucker eventually closed the 25-19 decision with a termination.
Set 3: Langston produced its strongest start of the match in the third, scoring six consecutive points after a 1-1 tie to surge ahead 7-1. The Lions later rebuilt the cushion to 12-5 and still held a 17-12 advantage deep enough into the frame to put the Golden Eagles under their first sustained pressure of the night.
Carlson finally sided out to make it 17-13, and Kosmicki's ensuing service turn completely changed the frame. A Langston attack error preceded a Kosmicki ace, Kador and Ferrari teamed up for a rejection, Kosmicki landed another ace and Ferrari terminated the final rally of the five-point service run, completing a six-point overall surge that moved John Brown in front 18-17.
Langston briefly pulled even at 18-18, but the Golden Eagles had found its rhythm. Ferrari sided out on the next rally before another Lion error and a Hyke termination stretched the margin to 21-18. After the visitors scored once more, JBU took the final four points as Ferrari added another kill and Montgomery supplied the match-ending termination for the 25-19 sweep.
"One thing I really like about this team is that we often have a different group of players leading us offensively from match to match, which makes us much more difficult to defend," added Carver. "Federica gave us a great spark off the bench tonight, while Mallory did an excellent job in the back row alongside Paige's steady play.
"We needed that discipline defensively against the way Langston played. It was a great way to start the week and get the Homecoming weekend underway."
John Brown completes its Homecoming 2026 weekend Friday evening (Oct. 2), welcoming Central Christian (Kan.) to Bill George Arena for a 6 p.m. first serve. The matchup is slated for live coverage through the Urban Edge Network and SAC Sports Network.
