Hubart L. White came to John Brown University in the fall of 1948 as JBU's first teacher-coach of intercollegiate athletics and physical education instructor. During his 29-year tenure, White taught many of the physical activity classes while establishing the men's swimming and diving and tennis programs.
His Christian values were reflected in the way he lived his life. According to John E. Brown, Jr., "During his 29 years at JBU, he saw physical education established as a major and intercollegiate athletics organized. He chose athletics over the ministry because he felt he would be able to touch the lives of more young people as a teacher and coach than as a minister."
The old outdoor pool at JBU was affectionately known as "Hub's Tub" as he gave many years of service to the Siloam Springs community by establishing the Red Cross learn-to-swim program for the youth of the city in addition to leading the JBU men's swimming and diving programs.
To honor his memory, the JBU indoor pool was renamed the Hub White Pool to commemorate his service to the city and university. White passed away on Jan. 4, 1980.
