Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season with 16 Program Top-10 Performances

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- John Brown University track and field opened its outdoor season Saturday (March 14) at the Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) Invitational at Hickingbotham Family Track & Field, posting 16 program top-10 performances in the Golden Eagles' first outdoor competition of 2026.

Freshman Katalina Chan headlined the Blue and Gold effort with outdoor program records in both hurdles events. Chan placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.98 seconds before adding a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.84.

The women's 1,600-meter relay team of junior Emma Morton, freshman Edith Bell, sophomore Clare Barger and junior Esther Norwood also rewrote the record books, placing seventh in 4:11.24.

Freshman Abby Steele showed versatility in the sprints, placing seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 13.01 seconds that ranks seventh in program history. Steele also placed sixth in the 200 meters, running 26.07 in wind-aided conditions. Barger competed in the 400 meters, running 1:04.55.

Junior Emma Morton continued her strong indoor season form into the outdoor campaign, running 2:25.84 in the 800 meters for the ninth-best time in program history.

The 1,500 meters saw twelve Golden Eagles compete, with freshman Abigail Stucker leading the way in fifth place at 4:54.25, seventh on the all-time list. Senior Hope Ahnfeldt, junior Esther Norwood and senior Emma Morton also competed in the event.

Senior Nikki Basye made her mark in the javelin, placing ninth with a throw of 29.24 meters (95 feet, 11 inches) that ranks second in program history. Basye also competed in the 100-meter hurdles.

Senior Naia Shepherd made a successful transition to the steeplechase, placing fifth in 14:42.00, the ninth-fastest time in program history.

Freshman Nadia Clark turned in a strong day across three throwing events. Clark placed fifth in the shot put at 11.37 meters (37 feet, 3.75 inches), threw 35.08 meters (115 feet, 1 inch) for eighth in the hammer, and recorded 33.45 meters (109 feet, 9 inches) in the discus. Both her hammer and discus marks landed in the program's top-10.

The men's squad produced several standout performances, beginning with freshman Payton Brack's steeplechase debut. Brack won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:33.87, seventh-fastest in program history, despite limited experience with the barriers.

Sophomore Sam Burkett and freshman Ian Sustaita Garcia went three-four in the 1,500 meters, with Burkett running 4:03.46 and Sustaita Garcia crossing in 4:03.60. Both performances rank in the program's top six. Sophomore Gabriel Pelkey, freshman Daniel Ogomo and freshman Landry Finch also competed in the event.

Burkett doubled back to place seventh in the 5,000 meters, clocking 15:38.79.

Sophomore Noah Osterloh placed sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.78 meters (41 feet, 11.25 inches), good for seventh all-time.

Senior Hayden Landers competed in the 400 meters, running 56.40, while senior Matthew Cook and junior Henry Zedler competed in the 800 meters.

Both relay teams delivered program top-10 performances. The men's 100-meter relay squad of freshman Emerick Wilson, Osterloh, sophomore Liam Van Der Horn and sophomore Benjamin Coker placed eighth in 45.03, second-fastest in program history. The 1,600-meter relay team of Cook, Sustaita Garcia, Zedler and sophomore Zach Briscoe finished fifth in 3:33.44, seventh all-time.

"Kat set two more program records this weekend in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, and it's been great to see how much fun she's having with the sport and with her training," head coach Peter Cunningham said. "I really think that enjoyment is a big reason she's performing so well. Her demeanor and light-heartedness are a big part of why she's accomplishing so many goals so early in her college career. Nadia also had a great weekend, making finals in multiple events, surpassing her goal marks in all three, and moving into the program's top-10 list in both the discus and the hammer. It's a great way for her to start the outdoor season, and she should carry a lot of confidence into the rest of the year."

Cunningham praised Brack's steeplechase debut despite the challenges.

"I'm incredibly proud of Payton in his first 3,000-meter steeplechase," he said. "He hasn't had much practice going over barriers, but he handled it as well as you could expect, even after falling twice over the water barrier and still finishing with a top-10 time in program history. Our men's 4x100 relay also ran the second-fastest time in program history, and we're excited because we know there's still room to fine-tune our handoffs and get even faster. Sam and Ian also had strong performances in the 1,500 meters, both running top-five program times. They approached the race very differently tactically, with Ian pushing the pace early and Sam staying patient before making his move, and it was great to see both of them compete hard and join the program's top-10 list together."

The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend (March 20-21) at the St. Mary (Kan.) Spire Distance Carnival in Leavenworth, Kan. Both days of action will take place inside the Charles Berkel Memorial Stadium.
