OH he was powerful ... Oh my, did he have quick feet ... Oh my-my could he fire rapid, explosive rocket shots on goal!
THERE is no absolute method of measuring the overall force of a soccer kick, but Glenroy Corbin, who wore the John Brown University men's soccer satins from 1983 through 1986, came as humanly possible to having a bionic leg. When he had taken his last kick for the Golden Eagles, he had indeed attained living legend status. Corbin's feats at JBU will long be remembered - he was that kind of awesome ball-striker.
AT 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, the strongly-built forward from Barbados was a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Corbin almost always drew double-team defenses, which attempted, in vain, to contain his abilities.
AS a result of his stellar play, many honors came propelling his way. He was named to the NCCAA National All-Tournament teams in 1983 and 1984, in addition to being named the Most Valuable Player in the 1984 tournament. He was also named to the NCCAA All-District 5 that year as well as in 1985. Corbin earned NCCAA All-America honors in 1985 and 1986. He was selected to the 1985 All-Midwest squad by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. His crowning achievement came in 1985 when he was named to the NAIA All-America third team.
FANS will continue to pack Alumni Field for years to come, but they may never again be privileged to see such a human dynamo. Corbin's raw power, in addition to his tremendous talent, made him something special.
